A Symbolic Still Life: Sylvia

Orange Tree Still Life

This was a painting that I created as a gift for my mother-in-law, Sylvia Zavaleta.  I wanted it to reflect the chief characteristic that I associated with her:  Generosity.  Therefore, I used symbolism to reflect this theme.  Classically, orange trees and their blossoms are symbolic of purity, chastity and generosity.  Additionally, the full cup (almost running over) is symbolic of abundance and charity.  Finally, my mother-in-law has excellent penmanship and is always writing thank you notes to express her gratitude. I felt the note with the pen and glasses to be appropriate components to complete the still life honoring such a gracious woman.
